Then, after Manny got frustrated and found himself another opponent, Floyd suddenly found his voice. And it’s a pretty ugly voice. In a noxious rant sent out via his Ustream feed, Floyd called Manny a ‘faggot’ and made derogatory comments about Filipinos eating dogs and cats. BC’s PlayNow won’t add to problem gambling, cuz no one wants to gamble there

Robert Williams almost shares a name with a famous comedian, and he’s almost as funny. But unlike Robin Williams, Robert works his stand-up routine at the Alberta Gambling Research Institute (AGRI), and his latest comedic one-liner is that British Columbia’s government-run online gambling site PlayNow.com will create legions of new problem gamblers who may have shunned private sites in the past, but will now flock to the ‘safer and more socially acceptable’ state-sponsored option.

This argument, frankly, makes one wonder exactly how they pass their time down at the AGRI, because they obviously aren’t studying the markeplace very carefully. Simply put, NOBODY views PlayNow as a safe place to play, unless you spent your childhood years playing in a boarded-up hand grenade factory.

Secondly, as another, slightly better informed expert claims in the same article, the odds on offer at PlayNow are so shite that even neophyte gamblers will quickly decamp and head for the better options available at the major international gaming operators. But that’s just the point, adds our Robert. See, PlayNow acts as a sort of soft ‘gateway drug’ that inevitably leads to the ‘crack cocaine’ of ‘offshore’ gambling.

For fuck’s sake… We don’t even know where to start debunking that…

If anyone still doubted that the ‘research’ conducted at Robert’s institute consisted of logrolling a bunch of preformed opinions, the final nail in the credibility coffin comes when Robert points to PlayNow’s weekly gambling limit of $10K, multiplies that by the number of weeks in a year, and comes to the conclusion that some of BC’s problem gamblers will be dropping half a mill per year at the site. Dude, if you’ve got half a mill in ready cash lying about, we want your problems.

Still, I secretly hope Robert’s right about that last one. See, I just enrolled in this muscle building course, which claims I can pack on 10 pounds of lean muscle a month. Using Robert’s math, by next September, I’ll be exactly 120 lbs. heavier, all of it rippling, awe-inspiring, chick-impressing musculature. Who Has the Best Shot at the WSOP Poker Hall of Fame?

September 3 – While the poker world awaits the decision of the World Series of Poker Hall of Fame members and eligible media, opinions are flying about who has the best chance of being elected. The ten nominees can be divided into three categories: good, better and best.

The Good
Every player that is nominated for the hall this year is a champion in his or her own right; even so, Linda Johnson, Jennifer Harman and Daniel Negreanu are considered to be the least likely of the group to gain admittance. Johnson and Harman are excellent players and great role models as woman players, but neither has won a bracelet since 2002. Negreanu, though one of the game’s most successful players, has produced a great deal of controversy lately, something that is likely to lose him points in the eyes of the current Hall members.

The Better
Dan Harrington, Barry Greenstein, Tom McEvoy and Scotty Nguyen are all great candidates for the Hall. Together they have 14 bracelets, respected training books and $27 million in combined career winnings. If these guys don’t win this year, they are all strong candidates for next year’s Hall.

The Best
Although the other seven are wonderful candidates, the two new members selected this year will likely be chosen from a group that includes Chris Ferguson, Erik Seidel and Phil Ivey. Seidel is tied with Ivey for fifth place on the career WSOP bracelet list with eight and has over $10 million in winnings. Ferguson only has five bracelets, but “Jesus” is one of the most recognizable faces in poker. Ivey has the eight bracelets, $13.4 million in career live winnings and $16 million in online winnings in just the last three years.

The Choices
While a surprise could shake up the voting, the best bets to be in the WSOP Poker Hall of Fame have Seidel edging out Ferguson for one spot while Ivey enters as a landslide winner. Regardless of who joins in 2010, the Hall will be getting two great members.
