September 3 – While the poker world awaits the decision of the World Series of Poker Hall of Fame members and eligible media, opinions are flying about who has the best chance of being elected. The ten nominees can be divided into three categories: good, better and best.

The Good
Every player that is nominated for the hall this year is a champion in his or her own right; even so, Linda Johnson, Jennifer Harman and Daniel Negreanu are considered to be the least likely of the group to gain admittance. Johnson and Harman are excellent players and great role models as woman players, but neither has won a bracelet since 2002. Negreanu, though one of the game’s most successful players, has produced a great deal of controversy lately, something that is likely to lose him points in the eyes of the current Hall members.

The Better
Dan Harrington, Barry Greenstein, Tom McEvoy and Scotty Nguyen are all great candidates for the Hall. Together they have 14 bracelets, respected training books and $27 million in combined career winnings. If these guys don’t win this year, they are all strong candidates for next year’s Hall.

The Best
Although the other seven are wonderful candidates, the two new members selected this year will likely be chosen from a group that includes Chris Ferguson, Erik Seidel and Phil Ivey. Seidel is tied with Ivey for fifth place on the career WSOP bracelet list with eight and has over $10 million in winnings. Ferguson only has five bracelets, but “Jesus” is one of the most recognizable faces in poker. Ivey has the eight bracelets, $13.4 million in career live winnings and $16 million in online winnings in just the last three years.

The Choices
While a surprise could shake up the voting, the best bets to be in the WSOP Poker Hall of Fame have Seidel edging out Ferguson for one spot while Ivey enters as a landslide winner. Regardless of who joins in 2010, the Hall will be getting two great members.

Poker News

John Wray, aka, JimmyLegs wrote a very interesting article on the Primacy Effect in Poker. Click Here to check out the article, and yes, you will have to get your subscription on, but don’t worry, it’s free and you probably should have a subscription to this site anyway. Just saying.

JimmyLegs talks about how a rookie poker player winning big at his first big poker game of the night might end up being the worst thing for him, because of the Primacy Effect. The effect of your brain remembering and placing more emphasis on things that happen earlier rather than viewing a series of events objectively. As JimmyLegs describes it, it’s kind of like how you remember your first girlfriend dozens of skirts later, or something along those lines.

Ricky Bobby once said, If you ain’t first your last…He was right in many respects. From working in a call center, I’ve seen newbies to online casinos pledge absolute loyalty just because they won in their first few tries. Online Casinos know this all to well, in essence, the primacy effect has been used by online gambling casinos from jump.

Online sportsbooks aren’t much different, When you look at sportsbook, obtaining first time clients is paramount to success. Clients tend to stay with a book they’re familiar with especially if they’ve won. That’s why customer service is such a huge difference maker. Not all clients are going to win in their first cracks at it, but a strong customer service team can make all the difference in the world between keeping that client or losing him to competitor. Even if a client doesn’t win, the memory of how accomodating, how helpful, how friendly and knowledgeable the customer service staff was can truly stick out in client’s mind.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the social instances in which the primacy effect work to your advantage. As gambling professionals, we like to party, we like to gamble, drink, and carry on, straight up. Sometimes, excessive partying can lead to a situation where a group orgie might ensue. I’ll just throw this out there, you can do what you want with it…Depending on how unsavory the participants are, you probably want to be the first guy in and first guy out, after you put on a show of course. Sounds counter intuitive, but trust me, you’ll live to F… another day. Just keeping it real.

Poker News

Day 2 saw Giovanni Safina jump to the top of the chip count table with a stack of 508,800, closely followed by Tonio Roeder with 424,400. The chump of the day was Brit Luke Schwarz, who missed out at the flop with a pair of kings. Better luck on day 3 ya loudmouth! Read more.

Poker News

The bank’s chairman, Sherkhan Farnood, is a recognized tournament poker player, having earned a WSOP bracelet in 2008, but will his next bracelet be a set of handcuffs?

Questions and allegations are flying fast and furious after it was revealed that Farnood had invested $160M of the bank’s assets in Dubai real estate, and that some of the purchases had been made under his own name. When asked why he’d put his own name on the deals, Farnood replied because “it was easier” to do it that way. For the record, it’s also easier to buy a WSOP bracelet on eBay than it is to win one yourself. Read more.

Poker News

Well fear not, as Betsoft have announced the launch of Poker3.com, 3D online poker which claims to take poker to the ‘next level’ of online gaming. Whether or not this means upon donning a pair of 3D specs that cards will jump out of the screen at you, or that the best players will earn a part in Cameron’s epic isn’t clear.

Players will be disappointed to find out that the software doesn’t stretch to having your own 3D avatar in game, however, they’ve consulted with the world’s top poker pros to help create the game. Lets just hope they sought the help of Liv Boeree. Read more.

Poker News
